Aerodromo de Celaya
Between 2010-2012, during my last years in architecture school, the economy of the Bajio metropolitan region in Mexico was experiencing an intense period of development. The automotive industry from the US, Japan, and Europe was once again changing the regional landscape strategically placing assembly lines, jobs, and stability into the territory.
At the same time, I was wondering how could we hack this massive reorganization of population and infrastructure? I set the challenge of designing a condition which would hybridize social behaviors to produce a contemporary citizen of the region
The proposal was a huge box filled with 'cultural' activities (for commerce, entertainment, and leisure) which uses infrastructure to attract demographic density. (Its placed on top of a train station, next to a parking lot, and two air-landing strips)
The design consist of a square plan that is multiplied upwards and articulated with elevators and escalators. The main volume is pushed into the earth to connect the underground program.
The purpose is to contain and mix activities, which intensify unexpected interactions of different types of ‘businessman’ inside an environment that stimulates their minds to create new commercial hybrids. It’s second objective is to help decentralize Mexico City’s congested air transit while blur the current boundaries in the national and international connectivity.
